Elk Ridge NatureWorks, LLC "Sharing unique nature experiences in every season"

Original artwork by Nooshin Chitsaz Our logo shows a dragonfly perched on trailing arbutus. This is something of an unusual sight for a couple of reasons. Dragonflies don't feed on flower nectar and trailing arbutus is not a common wildflower in Garrett County. Dragonflies are beneficial predators that hunt a variety of flying insects including mosquitoes and deer flies. Trailing arbutus (Epigaea repens), a member of the heath family, is an uncommon sight though not as scarce as it was at the turn of the last century. The fragrant scent of these delicate white to pink flowers was so well-loved, there was concern that it would be harvested to extinction. In response, protective laws were enacted in many states and at least one native plant society was formed. Our goal at Elk Ridge NatureWorks is to share unique nature experiences (like the one depicted in our logo) with visitors to our area, in a manner that preserves these biological resources for future generations. |
